Qantas has announced that it will be operating its brand new Airbus A220-300 aircraft to its first international destination - Singapore. The flight will be operating the Darwin-Singapore leg, which usually takes about 4 hours, and will be operated by Qantas' regional brand, QantasLink.
The first A220 flight to Singapore will commence on 30 March 2025, one year after Qantas' inaugural A220 flight. The flight, QF281, was initially set to be inaugurated on 9 December 2024, with Qantas' smaller Embraer E190 aircraft, but the date was postponed. The flight will operate 5 times per week.
The aircraft will come with a total of 137 seats - 10 business class seats in a 2-2 configuration and 127 economy seats in a 2-3 configuration. With the aircraft switch, Qantas will be able to accommodate up to 10,00 more passengers per year.
This will also mark the first time that an Airbus A220 has ever commercially operated to Singapore, as well as Southeast Asia.
Qantas Group's International CEO, Mr Cam Wallace, said in a media release:
“We’re so excited to be offering our customers more than 220,000 additional seats on our network, a new international destination, and our brand-new A220 aircraft for our Singapore-Darwin flights, which will be the first of its kind to operate out of Singapore. As part of our historic fleet renewal program, these changes are about having the right aircraft on the right route and responding to growing customer demand. This growth is good news for our people and also allows us to offer more choice for our customers travelling around the Qantas network.”
Qantas has taken delivery of the first 4 of 29 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which are steadily replacing its long-serving fleet of Boeing 717-200s as part of the Qantas fleet renewal program.
