Bonza, which is Australia's sole independent Low-Cost Carrier, has announced that it will be setting up a new base in Gold Coast, which is in Queensland, one of Australia's most popular destination for tourism. Bonza has once said the new base would open in November 2023 slowly starting flights to 11 destinations, but today it has revealed the thirteenth flight, which has been added to the list.

Starting the 5th of December, Bonza will operate two weekly services from Gold Coast (IATA: OOL) to Mount Isa (IATA: ISA), which is a well-known resource mine around 970 Nautical Miles from Gold Coast. Flights will operate every Tuesday and Friday, departing Gold Coast at 10:55 Local Time, and arriving at Mount Isa at 13:40 Local Time. The return flight will depart Mount Isa at 15:40 Local Time and is estimated to arrive at Gold Coast at 18:05 Local Time. The tickets start at AUD119 one way.

Mount Isa is the nineteenth destination of Bonza's expanding fleet, and this is due to the increasing number of Boeing 737 MAX 8s, which will be operated by Bonza on a wet lease from Canada's Flair Airlines. The two new Boeing 737 MAX 8s will be stationed at Gold Coast Airport for the time being, and will be returned to Flair Airlines. Bonza's CEO Tim Jordan said this morning (18 September 2023), while in Mount Isa:

"Affordable air travel has arrived in Mount Isa and we're delighted to announce this new service linking the Gold Coast to Mount Isa. At Bonza, we're about connecting more Aussies to their backyard than ever before and this new route will bring more tourists to Mount Isa from the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales region while offering Mount Isa locals the opportunity to travel to the Goldie without it costing the earth."

Jordan also added that the Bonza partnership with Queensland Airports Limited (QAL), a company which owns and operates airports at three Bonza destinations- Namely Gold Coast, Townsville and now Mount Isa – was extremely vital in securing new routes. The CEO of Queensland Airports Limited, Amelia Evans said:

"The commencement of this direct service between the Gold Coast and Mount Isa is a testament to the ongoing efforts of our team and Bonza's commitment to improving regional connectivity. Bonza's new connection offers a convenient and affordable option for travellers and contributes to a broader reduction in the cost of regional airfares. This announcement is not only a significant milestone for our group of airports, but also an important connection for the Mount Isa community and our State.”
