On 9 August 2024, at about 1.30pm local time, an ATR 72-500 aircraft, operated by Voepass, crashed in Sao Paulo. The flight, 2Z2283, operated by a 14-year-old ATR 72-500 registered PS-VPB, was carrying 57 passengers and 4 crew on board when it crashed. The flight departed Cascavel Adalberto Mendes da Silva Airport (SBCA/CAC) and was bound for Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (SBGR/GRU).

Voepass said in a statement: “At this time, Voepass is prioritizing provision of unrestricted assistance to the victims’ families and effectively collaborating with authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”

According to Flightradar24, the aircraft lost more than 15,000 feet in a minute during the crash, and the aircraft's ground speed dropped to 94 knots from 205 knots an hour before the accident, before regaining speed and accelerating back to a range of 200-300 knots. However, these speed losses and gains happened more than 5 times throughout the flight.

Before the crash, there were no attempts made by the pilot to contact air traffic controller about the predicament that they were in. The cause of the crash is currently unknown, and is under investigation, though experts have presumed that the crash could have been due to ice buildup on the aircraft engines.

Videos circulating around social media show the plane rotating in the air as if the aircraft was stalling and not moving forward. Soon after, the plane drastically lost altitude and crashed into a residential neighbourhood in Sao Paulo. After the crash, thick smoke could be seen billowing from the crash site. None of the residents residing in the housing units were injured, although a home in a condominium near the crash site suffered structural damage.

Project AeroFlight would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims.
